Patient Information regarding Tonsillectomy/ Adenoidectomy in children

Pre operative instructions
The adenoids are lymphoid tissue that normally exists in the upper naso-pharynx, which is part of the upper throat, behind the nose. The tissue is removed because of enlargement, causing repeated infections of the nose and chronic nasal obstruction, which in turn causes blockage of the eustachian tubes, infection of the middle ear, glue ear and deafness.

The procedure is done under a general anaesthetic and in the majority of cases, the patient can be put off to sleep with a minimum of distress. In the operating theatre, a few seconds breathing the anaesthetic gas is all it takes. In the case of children, when they are brought into the theatre area, we encourage their parents to remain with the child until they are asleep.

Once the patient wakes up in Recovery, we bring the relatives/ parents in to sit with them until they are discharged. It is normal for small children to be disorientated and distressed on first awakening. Do not be alarmed, this will pass rapidly and they will be reassured by your presence.

During the anaesthetic, the anaesthetist will give some pain relief, and if this is insufficient, we can further give some analgesic in Recovery.

On the day of your surgery
Arrange for a responsible adult to collect you from the day surgery and stay overnight with you.
Nil by mouth for at least six hours before the procedure.
Wear loose fitting clothes such as a tracksuit.
Have a shower or bath prior to admission.
Remove any excess nail varnish and excess make up.
Bring any medication you take with you to the day surgery.

In the case of small children
The child may like to wear their pyjamas or their special choice of clothes.
Bring along their favourite toy, stuffed toy or books.
Should your child have any special dietary needs you may be required to bring these along. We give only a minimal amount of food post-operatively . Too much food, too quickly can provoke vomiting

After your surgery
As is the case with most surgery, a little pain will be expected. Paracetamol will help relieve this pain. Earache is common following an adenoidectomy. This may occur for a day or so. We advise parents to try if possible to keep their children quiet for a day or two.

Full activity including returning to school should be possible in 5 days, when normal energy has been regained and a full diet is taken.

Should you have any queries, do not hesitate to ask our staff.
