Patient information regarding a Breast Biopsy

Pre operative instructions
Surgical Anatomy: The breasts are mammary glands that lie on the pectoralis muscle of the anterior chest wall. They are surrounded by a layer of fat and are encased in an envelope of skin. Operative procedures on the breast may be indicated in the presence of disease or as a result of physical changes.

The surgery will involve a small incision (cut) in the breast to enable a piece of tissue to be collected and sent to pathology for examination.

If the lump is unable to be felt by manual examination, a fine wire inserted under x-ray guidance before surgery may be necessary (needle localisation). THINGS TO ARRANGE BEFORE COMING TO THE DAY

Things to arrange before coming to the Day Surgery
~ You will need to arrange time off work. (3-5days).
~ Arrange for someone to look after your children (for at least 24 hours) if applicable.
~ Arrange for a responsible adult to collect you from the day surgery and stay with you overnight.

On the day of your surgery
~ Wear loose fitting clothes - such as a tracksuit,
~ Our receptionist will instruct you regarding fasting,
~ Have a shower or bath prior to admission,
~ Remove any excess make up and nail varnish.

After your surgery
In recovery, you can expect to rest for two hours. A pressure dressing will be applied to your breast, and instructions will be given to you regarding its removal. This dressing must remain dry whilst in place.
You may have a small drain inserted during surgery which will be removed either before you go home or arrangements will be made for removal the following day.

You may experience some pain and discomfort afterwards, mild pain tablets such as Panadol or Panadiene can be taken for this. There may be some bruising for a few days (don't be concerned).

The wearing of a bra may make you feel more comfortable during the day and will provide support at night.
On discharge from the Day Surgery, more information will be given to you.
